What is Mindful Meditation?

First, what is mindfulness? (two brief definitions)

  • It is an elevated awareness of what you are paying attention to (a mental state) or
  • It is the moment-to-moment mental tracking of the character of your experience.
  • It is the practice of elevated awareness during your focused attention.
  • MM can be 10 seconds or an hour long

Second, what is meditation?

  • It is a mind/body exercise of focused attention (an active skill).

So, what is mindful meditation?

  • It is the practice of elevated awareness during your focused attention.

Skills Learned

You learn how to just “be” in your own skin without going nuts.

You learn how to develop tolerance to discomfort, and actually mitigate that discomfort.

You learn how to experience the world on your terms.

You learn that your mind can be your “buddy” rather than an uncontrolled unleashed “dog”.

You learn how to dissolve the intensity of your negative thoughts and negative emotions.

Mindful Meditation can be 10 seconds or an hour long.

What Meditation is not:

  • Meditation does not give you superpowers, like reading minds or levitating (that would be cool if it did).
  • Meditation does not solve your life’s problems.
  • Meditation is not the same thing as being “hypnotized”.
What Meditation is not

Please note, the most important personal growth doesn’t necessarily happen when you’re meditating on a yoga mat or in your comfy chair. It often happens in real time amid conflict, or stress, or frustration, or anxiety, or anger, and then you suddenly realize that you have a choice, and your reaction is different, you’re coping differently, and that you’re in control!
